e’re very aware of the fact that we use the word Holy and the word Moly quite a lot here at GG HQ, but, there was only one way to sum up tonight’s free Grease At The Cove screening.

Holy. Agus. Moly.

Everything was just perfect. That unpredictable weather couldn’t have been nicer to us, the clouds parting for a blast of sun before an orange sky sunset, and then the blanket of clouds returning, helping us to keep us warm through as the night kicked in.

Off the coast, David Roche and his beloved, Joan, were celebrating their 11th anniversary in style – by mooring their boat nearby and joining the fun. Children ran around like it was the night before Christmas, only they got to open their presents early, as goody bags overfloweth, beach balls bounced from head to head, and spot prizes of Grease DVDs and CDs along with the award-winning Theatre Lane Café vouchers were given out to the best 1950s fancy dress.

Matt and Karima played some rock’n’roll, old and new, for Kitty LeRoux and her man over at the Cove steps, whilst one of the young Byrne lads from Crowe Abbey tried that trick of bringing out loose wristbands to his mates, group by group. Oh, and an orderly queue formed at Mandy’s fine Crépe Box from start to finish.

We got there early, at 6pm, to help the man behind it all, Ross McParland, set up camp. Such an incredibly wonderful gesture, just one man, footing the entire bill for Wicklow’s first-ever cinema on the beach – a big kid just thrilled to add one more treat to the goody bag, constantly thriving to make this already special night that little bit more special.

The mighty Dave Byrne and his crew from outdoormovies.ie soon joined us, as did Mandy and her clan for The Crépe Box, along with Daragh and Eamon from Theatre Lane, Lisa and her wonderful daughters, Ariana and Holly, and their friends, plus Oisin and his three buddies, all there to make sure everyone had a magical night.

And we did. As that last big hit, You’re The One That I Want, blasted out, well, of course we had to go full Fraggle Rock on such a night.
