Greystones should be very proud of the 19 members of the Poseidon Life Saving Club, who are just back from London – where they competed in the RLSS UK National Speed Life Saving Championships 2016.
Taking place at London’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Pool, club coach John Doyle and two mothers of club members joined them for the trip – the adult trio also competing in the event.
The largest competition of its kind in the UK, the National Speed Championships sees lifesaving athletes aged 12 and upwards from across the UK and Ireland competing for national titles in what is the only sport that has a humanitarian foundation.
With the aim of helping promote lifesavers’ skills, knowledge and techniques, the championships also play an important role in spreading the importance of water safety.
The second time Greystones’ Poseidon Life Saving Club had entered the championships, the competition events included manikin carry, line throw and obstacle, with both individuals and teams competing.
In the end, John Doyle swam away with two bronze medals, with, suffice to say, much fun had by all. Parents, supporters and organisers joined the club, as they teamed up with Dublin’s St John Berchmans for the competition.
