As you can see from the headline illustration, the renovation of Greystones’ train station
With each portrait being photographed by Gillian Buckley and then embedded in the 3m x 1.4m steel totems by precision craftsman Billy Griffin, it’s worth noting that sponsors will get to keep the original Tom Byrne paintings.

t’s one of the most ambitious project to hit Greystones, and it might just be the coolest…
With a series of commissioned portraits already completed, our beloved old train station is about to become an art gallery.
And not just any old art gallery – each of the Tom Byrne portraits will feature a famous Greystonian, from Ronnie Drew to Averil Deverell, along with a handy QR code on each revealing their life and times. And in the process, telling the story of the town.
Part of a major renovation of a train station that first saw huffed and puffed into action back in 1856, local artist Mary Kate Hardy will also be transforming a seaside platform building into a 45-foot wall mural celebrating the town and its history.

will involve more than just 5,376,299 licks of paint. Waves of Portugese Laurel hedging (or Prunus Lusitanica, as his mum calls him) will be providing much of the backdrop whilst colourful, illuminated scoop planters will add another dash of fun.
As scoop planters were born to do.

First sprouted as a fine idea back in 2017, the Greystones Town Team have come together with the Tidy Towns gang and The Whale to link arms and aims with CIE and Irish Rail for this mildly monumental makeover.
And although much of it has been signed, sealed and is now ready to be delivered, Town Team members Dermod Dwyer and Ross McParland are leading the call for sponsors so that this tantalising transformation can be completed.

“To keep this makeover train moving, we need you,” says Dwyer, as he and young McParland launch the campaign. “This is our town, and you can make this project part of your legacy – so, please step up and help fund this citizen project.”
