Is it a bird? Is it a plane…?

ne year on from the passing of three-year-old Gavin Glynn – after his long, brave, globe-straddling battle with cancer – it’s important to remember just how big a smile this little superman beamed back at a world that must have been so very confusing to someone so young.

For anyone at any age to have to come to terms with such a deadly condition is a major challenge. That Gavin Glynn should do so at three years of age, and with such a wide-eyed lust for life, was truly superhuman.

Perhaps the little guy really was Superman’s little brother? How else to explain the remarkable strength this kid had, both physically and mentally? Or the fact that, well, in his beloved red and blue costume, Gavin looked just like Superman. Only cooler.

And how else to explain the simple moniker emblazoned down the side of his coffin – SUPERGAVIN…?

But just how strong were Gavin’s superpowers really? Well, he could make raving heterosexual Greystones men do the strangest things – as witnessed here…

Of course, having a loving family – embracing, encouraging and enriching his life at every single turn – must have helped Gavin find that hero deep down inside. Here was a boy who not only had all of Ireland rooting for him, but America, England, Australia and beyond. All of them were inspired by this little three-year-old beam of light that refused to go out without a fight…

And there was nowhere on earth that was touched deeper by Gavin Glynn than right here. “He just battled every single day for three years,” said his father, John, at the funeral, “but he smiled and laughed… and gave us joy.” Gavin let us know that we all could be heroes…

When we said goodbye on Friday October 24th 2014, as those red and blue balloons headed on up through the sky to guide Gavin’s way, it felt good to know that we all now had someone up there looking over us, making sure we were safe. SuperGav had taken flight…
