The Codling Wind Park has recently been awarded a Marine Area Consent by the Government and will be undertaking public consultation up to the 8th February.

The largest wind farm in Ireland will have 100 large turbines from 13 to 22km offshore between Wicklow and Greystones.

We need to get this renewable power but the promoters need to do more to reduce the visual effect and to explain and involve the affected communities – and provide benefits and trade.

Three wind farms are planned to come together off Greystones; it will be Wind Farm Central.

The turbines, taller than local landmark Bray Head, will occupy most of the sea horizon, with a 115 degrees arc of view. The operators have been asked to leave a visual gap of at least 15 degrees between wind farms so there is not a continuous line of them, but none have made a commitment about this.

I have also asked them to open an Interpretive Centre at Greystones Harbour to show both the effect and need for wind farms and to use the harbour for some crew transfer. So far, they have not agreed to do so.

It is essential not to take the local community for granted and to provide benefits and involvement for those who will have to look at it.

I have also asked them to provide subsidised trips to see it during construction.
