Going Down The Rabbit Hole

ure and begorrah, what better way to spend a fine Saturday morning than going down a dark Delgany passageway with loco historian Shay Clear…?

Having examined some of Delgany’s more distinct old buildings last week, we thought it would be wise to continue on that front today, with a quick look at the old auction house and its adjacent schoolhouse.

Both are in the shadow of the formidable Christ Church, and it was in the former that many an antique could once be found, as they bid on old furniture, paintings, clothes and general dusty knick-knack.

It was also here that North Carolina-born Kate Bush-wannabe Tori Amos recorded her so-so 1996 album, Boys For Pele, her third collection of quirky, heartfelt and damned pretentious PMS FM songs.

The old auction rooms – where, fittingly enough this morning, music lessons were being conducted – are positioned right across from a sweet little house that once housed the church sexton (think Groundskeeper Willie with a bible), and it was here that we began our walk down through the old mass path known as The Glebe.

We’ve been here before on the Guide, but given that Shay spent almost two years as part of a prison chain gang resurrecting the right-of-way, our boy had plenty to say about this groovy little Delgany hideaway.

Once Shay managed to catch his breath, of course. Jaysus, for a homeless guy, that man is unfit.
