hristmas 2018 was the last time anyone got a chance to view the life-size crib in Delgany’s Carmelite Church.

A gift from “a pious woman from Bray” way back in 1870, it’s perhaps fitting that this much-loved nativity scene should end up being ensconced in Bray’s Holy Redeemer.

So, it was a mildly historic day today when, for the first time in five years, people were able to not only step inside the Carmelite Church but also say a little prayer in front of the crib.

Only, it won’t be the actual crib – the original being a little too heavily ensconced in the Holy Redeemer to be moved – but a replica. Which, as the bould Deckard will tell you, can be just as good.

It was all part of the festive celebrations with the 57 Carmelite residents currently taking refuge here from the war in Ukraine.

Running from 6pm to 8pm, there was a short presentation of music and song from the Ukrainians (including a five-language version of Silent Night, below), after which they were joined by dancers from the Finnerty School of Irish Dance in Newtown.

It was a beautiful night, with thanks and praise going not only to our Ukrainian hosts, but Gabriel and Sally Ann Dooleys, who helped pull the whole show together.

It was the perfect night for Delganites of a certain age to remember all the Christmas celebrations past in this beautiful building that has, of course, been gifted back to the good people of Delgany. Just like those funky nuns ordered.
