he beautiful weather in Greystones was verging on the Caribbean this afternoon, as The Plaza Market returned to Greystones harbour for another Sunday summer run.
Then again, this groovy Greystones Tidy Towns gathering has a habit of attracting the sun.
And, after debuting last summer and sparkling up our Christmas, this is a market that certainly attracts the crowds, the whole town seemingly out for a stroll down by the sea today, grabbing some rays and some home-baked goodies, and checking out the biggest array of crafters, painters and arty chancers this side of the annual RDS Yuletide shindig.
It was a truly glorious day, and it was heartening to see so many Greystonians step outside their front doors all at the same time, and simply hanging out together. It might have been the sunlight playing tricks on us, but we’re pretty sure that there wasn’t a mobile phone in sight.
The growth in popularity of The Plaza Market saw the traditional main square extending on down the boulevard, with a dizzying array of goodies on offer. From established brands such as BeKind Incense, Eden Gifts and Smelly Nelly’s to such new kids on the harbour block as Katrina Knits, Creative Blooms and Thai Woven Bag, there were also food stalls galore, gift ideas-a-go-go, and local artists such as James Venables Kenny, Padraig O’Loughlin, snapper Trevor Quinn and the Bradshaw lass.
And that’s only the tenth of it. With over 60 stalls in all, you’ll find anything and everything you might want at The Plaza Market. And quite a few things you didn’t know you needed.
The knock-on effect could be felt across the road too, as a packed Boat Yard saw its usual array of food trucks joined by artist Helen Magee for her al fresco exhibition, whilst there were queues at Sweeney’s, The Beach House and La Creperie.
So, if you’re looking for a whole bunch of reasons to be cheerful, Sundays down at the harbour from 11am to 5.30pm should just keep you smiling for the week ahead…
