atest press release from Greystones Bowling Club, issued on Sunday, September 15th 2024…
This has been a very good year for the Greystones Bowling Club.
We had a very successful open weekend in May, with 39 visitors through our gates to give bowling a try and 20 more applicants through our website. After their three sessions with our hard working coaches we got 20 new members. They were welcomed with open arms and have settled in really well, all enjoying their bowling and the social aspect of the club, especially our social roll-ups.
Our club matchplay competitions have been taking place all during the summer with some very interesting results. The first of the finals weekend was this weekend and the winners were: Lady Captain’s Prize Ann Barry, runner-up Sally Ryan, Ladies Pair winners were Mary Doyle and Deirdre Naidoo, runners up were Ger O’Brien and Marion Barnwell.
On Saturday we had the President’s Prize, which was won by Richard Cresswell, runner up Richard Bierney. The George Plant Trophy, which is for new bowlers this year, was won by Fearghal Murphy and the runner up- was Freda O’Keeffe.
Sunday we had the Ladies Championship which was won by Ann Barry, the runner up was Sally Ryan. The mixed pairs was won by Anne O’Loughlin and Sean O’Brien and the runners up were Marion Barnwell and John Murphy. There was some fantastic bowling throughout the weekend, well done to everyone.
The Men’s Championship and the men’s pairs competition will be played on Saturday 22st and Sunday 22nd of September, The Irish Lawn Bowls Championships were held in Leinster Bowling Club in August and Greystones were well represented. We had one lady and three teams in the semi-finals in the Junior Championships.
Our men’s team of 4 were the visitors in the McCready Cup, beating Shankill in the final. For a small club, this was a great showing.
Then we had 2 of our ladies, Ger O’Brien and Mary Doyle representing Irish Lawn Bowls in the Junior Inter Association matches in Bangor. Both ladies played very well and won both their matches, unfortunately, the ILB lost overall. The icing on the cake was that our Saturday Division 2 team won their league, the Cullen Cup, and will now be promoted to the senior division.
Well done to Captain John Conroy and all the players who contributed throughout the year. This was a back to back win as we had won Monday Division 1 last year.
We will have our Furling (closing of the green) on Sunday, October 7th.
