hen cartoonist Charles Addams first created a series of standalone single-panel comics back in 1938, he could never have imagined that his then-unnamed family of gothic misfits would become stars of television, film, video games and the stage.
Breaking through in the 1960s with a much-loved TV series, in more recent years, success has come again with various big screen outings (the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values being a true classic) and the Netflix hit, Wednesday, led by Jenna Ortega.
The latter, of course, is Wicklow-bound, as Tim Burton brings Ortega and Christina Ricci (who played Wednesday in the ’90s big-screen outings) to Killruddery for some macabre skulduggery.
In the meantime, St David’s in Greystones have brought The Addams Family to town, with the musical stage version running from Wednesday, February 28th to Friday, March 1st. And it’s proven to be something of a spectacular production.
The cast includes Sofia McDarby as Wednesday Addams, Rian O’Gorman as Pugsley, Vitan Moran as Gomez, Kate Macadam as Morticia, Joe Ferguson as Lurch, Holly Sheehy as Grandma Addams and Travis O’Farrell as Fester.
The rest of the cast included Miguel Ramirez McMahon, Isobel Creane and Fionn Ryan as the Beinekes, whilst the Ancestors were made up of Poppy Mullally, Mia Thompson Ibánez, Stella Doyle, Aine Fitzgerald, Roisin O’Connor, Casey Hall, Ellie Hall, Holly Dunne, Miles Matthews O’Connor, Nicole Maxwell, Niamh Kelly, Caitlin Hanrahan, Maria Hassett, Maise Grey, Eabha Hardie, Finn Morris, Senan Brougham, Samuele Martin, Aoife Fox, Aoife O’Donovan, Charlotte Hudson, Cian Fairley, Mya Doran, Fionnan Gallagher-Kilbane, Grace McDermott, Joseph Glynn, Lucy Coyle, Paddy Marrinan, Rhiannon Murphy, Rhys Fitzpatrick, Sarah Duff, Seán McLaughlin, Shannon Knight, Willow Evans, Zoe O’Faherty and Luke Kieran.
Behind the scenes it was Eoin O’Neill, Deaglán O’Neill, Kiera Danilova, Dillon Kelly, Molly Mooney, Aoife Jansen, Conor Heffernan, Karolina Pyrz, Tom Woodley, Jill Tritschler and Grace Callan.
Big shout-out to the main sponsors, Daly’s SuperValu and EVAD, alongside The Beach House, Brady’s of Greystones, The Rise, Halfway Up The Stairs, La Touche Barbers, La Touche Wines, Anya Llewellyn Homes, David Flynn Electrical, AMOC Jewellery, PC Peripherals, Lilypad Home Accessories, The Baby Doc, Wicklow Office Suits, Zenobia, Jokers, Webio and The Barrel Sauna.
“What a show!” says school principal Simon Carey. “The transition year students and our tremendous staff have delivered again. By rocking Greystones for a second year in a row…”
Darn tootin’. Fair fecks too, to our roving snapper John McGowan, who captured Thursday night’s show in all its wicked wonder…
