County Wicklow is set to receive €14 million in funding for regional and local roads.

It forms part of a €626 million investment in 2023 for regional and local roads. Some of the funding will also be used for bridge repairs, 329 climate change adaptation projects, and over 300 safety projects across the country.

Cllr Stephen Stokes has welcomed the announcement. “Geographically Wicklow is a large county, with an extensive road network. There is significant investment going into scenic areas, which is important from a tourism viewpoint. Just over €7 million will be invested in restoration improvements.”

Cllr Stokes has written to the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, urging more investment in urban and suburban areas. Cllr Stokes added: “Financially, it makes sense to protect and renew the existing regional and local road network, rather than letting them fall into disrepair.

“However, I have written to Minister Ryan seeking more investment in the Greystones Municipal District. In particular we need decisive funding in roads and footpaths. I would like to see the restoration of the annual footpath grant that used to exist in the days of Greystones Town Council.

“In addition I have specifically highlighted that Church Road, Greystones needs investment. This would be good for local people, and help to boost tourism.”
