t was a story we broke here in the Guide back in October 2015, the Department Of Education mercifully snatching the sale of 11,000 square feet Old Convent from greedy developers.

The saving of St Brigid’s fine old building was made official in January of this year, and now, local-boy-done-good Simon Harris has swung by the Greystones school to confirm that the Department will be funding their new schoolyard.

Speaking of the move, Harris said, “I have worked closely with St Brigid’s for many years, and I was delighted to help them to secure the purchase of the next-door convent building. A significant amount of work will have to be undertaken in order to determine the best way to utilise this, however, I was eager to work with the school to find an interim use for the additional space.

“From my own visits to the school, and speaking to teachers and parents alike, it was clear the limited yard space was having a negative impact on the entire school community. The school had to stagger breaks and limit physical activity to keep the area safe.

“As Minister For Health, I am very aware of the importance of exercise and physical activity for our young people. It is vital that we are encouraging children to embrace these, as it is the best way to protect their health and well-being into the future.

“I was really delighted to work with St Brigid’s and the Department of Education over the summer to secure €100,000 to do the necessary work to give the school proper play space. The area around the convent has now been cleared and a child-friendly surface has been put in place.

“The school’s yard space how now more than doubled, and the staff and students have proper facilities for outdoor activities. I was honoured to officially open the new yard this week, and celebrate a new chapter for the school, as they now work towards their Active Flag.”

Young Harris concluded, “I want to thank and commend the school community – Principal Máire Costello, teachers, parents and the Board Of Management – who have worked so hard on this project. I know the students of St Brigid’s will be delighted to be able to enjoy their expanded schoolyard.

“Supporting and developing our schools in Co Wicklow is extremely important, and I will continue to work as hard as I possibly can to deliver investment and support to our local schools.”
