e may be battling an incurable cancer, but it’s clear that Greystones lad Lee McGuirk isn’t going down without a party.

Not if his family have anything to do with it.

Just launched yesterday, the cheekily-titled Lee’s Retirement Fund has been put together by Lee’s younger sister, Amy, and his mum, Laura, so this 21-year-old lad can truly enjoy the time he has left.

And in less than 24 hours, the fundraiser has hit a staggering €16,154.

Having spent Halloween and Christmas in hospital, undergoing spinal surgery and beginning chemotherapy, the hope is to make Lee’s move home as comfortable as possible.

“Initially, we were all lost and confused about what we were fighting for,” explains Amy. “The doctors left us with no hope, and our strength was tested during this difficult time. Lee had so many questions, like how he could continue living when he knows his future is being taken from him.

“We have come to understand the significance of every single moment we spend together, even if it’s in a hospital room. No one’s life is guaranteed and every day is unpredictable, but for now, our focus is to create memories and tick off lee’s bucket list of life through this GoFundMe initiative.”

Pointing out that her brother’s cancer is terminal and incurable, Amy expresses her wish that their fundraiser was for experimental trials or potential treatments. Instead, Lee’s scans will be sent to hospitals worldwide, in the hope of finding some answers.

Posting on his own social media yesterday, Lee said, ‘I was told I had a few years at best. It shook me to my core, and it was definitely the hardest thing I’ve had to go through in my life, but I have accepted it, and I won’t let it slow me down.’
