riginally suggested in 2014, confirmed in 2017 and site approved in 2018, it wasn’t until April 2022 that Wicklow County Council finally announced firm plans for a Greystones Primary Care Centre.
With the council-owned, 1.33acre site situated behind the Greystones Medical Centre at the South Beach, by December 2022, those plans also included two apartment blocks and, be the holy, a 75-bed hotel.
Which could come in handy.
And now, on the PCC front, Minister Stephen Donnelly has some more good news…
Wicklow TD and Health Minister Stephen Donnelly today confirmed that a planning application for a 61,000 square feet (5,600sqm) Primary Care Centre to serve the communities of Greystones, Kilcoole and Delgany has been lodged with Wicklow County Council.
Minister Donnelly said: “I’m delighted to confirm that the planning application has now been lodged with Wicklow County Council. What is being proposed is a state-of-the-art and modern Primary Care Centre that will facilitate important health services for the residents of Greystones, Kilcoole and Delgany.
“I approved funding in the 2024 Health Capital Plan to ensure we could progress to planning this year. Significant design and development work has now been completed and it’s a major step to see the planning application lodged with the county council.
“I’m hopeful that the planning application will be successful and this part of the process could be concluded before the end of the year. This would mean we could go to tender for construction early next year, have the construction diggers and boots on the ground by the second half of the year, and this Primary Care Centre will be treating patients in 2026.”
The development will consist of a four-storey building off the Mill Road in Greystones on a site to be developed by the Health Service Executive.
The proposed development will extend to over 5,600 square metres on a 0.63 hectare site.
Minister Donnelly continued: “This will be one of the biggest Primary Care Centres in the country and will be similar in scale to the centres developed in Arklow and Bray. I’ve been working to ensure that we deliver a centre that provides the right community care for the people of Greystones, Kilcoole and Delgany. What is now proposed also allows for future expansion as I have no doubt our communities will continue to grow and require more primary care.”
The Primary Care Centre will offer a range of services, including:
⦿ A large-scale GP Practice (5 consultation rooms) ⦿ Two Primary Care Teams (doctors, nurses, home helps, health and social care professionals and health care assistants working together to ensure patients receive services in a timely and coordinated way in their community) ⦿ Dental Services ⦿ Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS Team and Community Team) ⦿ Adult Mental Health Service ⦿ National Counselling Service ⦿ Older persons day Service ⦿ Disability Services ⦿ 2nd GP Practice (future expansion) ⦿ Diagnostics (future expansion)
Minister Donnelly concluded: “It’s ten years since a Primary Care Centre was first proposed for this community and we are now at a really important milestone in getting this delivered and treating patients in their community.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has worked with me and the HSE to getting to this point.
“There is still a lot of work to be done to get this centre built and delivered and I’ll continue to progress this project until it is treating patients.”
Clearly a primary care centre and a hotel are needed in Greystones – but this lovely wild area with trees with birds and wildlife will be sacrificed. Is there no where else this could be built? – for, example, on part of the proposed film studio site?
Great news to see the site being used to good effects . About time a hotel is coming !! The planners need to do everything sustainable , solar power roof panels on all buildings , rain water harvesting , biodiverisity planting of native flowers and trees . Bus service links outside the site .
