very miserable Sunday morning in Greystones suggested, very strongly, that the day was going to be a washout.
Which was crushing, given that there was so much going on in the town yesterday.
Not only was the weekly Plaza Market running from 11am to 5.30pm but Revive Clinic had their South Beach retreat, Powerscourt had their outdoor theatre production of A Secret Garden and The Hot Spot was having veteran covers band Full Circle round for its very final fling down at the harbour.
And then there were the 30 outdoor nosh-ups around the town, organised as part of this year’s Street Feast, the annual Eat Out To Make Out with a drunken neighbour. Or, if you’re not feeling particularly French, to simply rub shoulders of lamb with your next of door and remember that it’s so much easier to live on Sesame Street rather than Lonely Street. Even if your baby has left you.
From Anne and the gang at Heathervue to Gurpeet and co at Seabourne View, from Paddy at Carrig Mill to Lucianne at Glenheron View, there were afternoon al fresco parties all over town, and on up through Delgany, Kilcoole, Enniskerry, Bray and beyond.
And each one of them greeted the day with a groan, thanks to that torrential downpour in the early hours.
Being Ireland though, that blinky washing machine soon switched to spin dry. Then rinse. Then soak. And then…
Well, let’s just say there was both rain and sun inbetween the showers, and it meant that the market did market, those Powerscourt thespians did thesp, Revive did thrive and Full Circle did indeed bring Ailbhe’s house down.
And all those hardy Street Feast feckers had their communal chowdowns, breaking bread, gargling gargle and generally catching up on all the latest gossip.
Well done to all those who took part, and to Newtown’s Sam Bishop and the gang for pulling together yet another nationwide group hug.
