atest press release from Taoiseach Simon Harris, issued on Friday, May 17th 2024…
Taoiseach Simon Harris has announced that €79,489 has been awarded to 5 Wicklow biodiversity projects.
The funding is being announced under the Local Biodiversity Action Fund (LBAF). Wicklow is lucky to have such a rich biodiversity landscape, this funding will be hugely beneficial to successful applicants, not least local communities.
Speaking today, Taoiseach Simon Harris said: “Ireland and specifically Wicklow has unique potential when it comes to biodiversity.
“I am delighted that Wicklow is in line to receive close to €80,000 to fund 5 specific local biodiversity projects which will go a long way in protecting nature and raising awareness across the county.
“Wicklow County Council plays a huge role in ensuring we emphasise the need to fund and drive local biodiversity.
“Wicklow County Council has several passionate staff working on biodiversity including Dr. Laura Kehoe who has been working for over a year as a biodiversity officer in the Council driving change, engaging with local communities and highlighting the importance of biodiversity in Wicklow.
“I know as a parent how important it is to raise awareness among young children of the importance of biodiversity and climate action.
“What’s most heartening is the diversity of projects that are being funded under the LBAF today including:
⦿ Coastal Conservation in Wicklow (€24,650) ⦿ Managing Council-owned Sites for Enhanced Biodiversity (€24,650) ⦿ Biodiversity education, engagement & research in County Wicklow (€22,950) ⦿ Monitoring Woodland Bats (€5,950) ⦿ Recording Irish mayfly – establishing conservation status (€1,289)
Taoiseach Simon Harris added: “The Government I lead is committed to addressing climate change and addressing it the right way, by engaging with communities. We are living through a climate emergency, the world is changing and we need to work together on climate action.
“If we are united and continue to deliver local community projects like the biodiversity ones announced today we can make a huge difference at a local level and at a national level.”
