hen you meet Niamh Coffey, it’s clear that the lady is doing something that she truly loves…

Having been sidetracked by computer studies and French at college, young Coffey has dedicated pretty all of her adult life to physiotherapy.

Which would explain that time she moved back in with her parents and returned to Trinity College Dublin, this time leaving with a BSc [Hon] in helping people go from knotty to nice.

“I’m not sure what I was thinking when I headed to college for computer studies and French,” says Niamh when we meet up at her very sunny Charlesland studio this afternoon. “I might have thought that, since I loved sports therapy so much, it must be a hobby, not a career.

“Happily, I was wrong…”

After four years in St Columcille’s Hospital – covering respiratory, neuro rehab, cardiac rehab, weight management, diabetes and whatever-you’re-having-yourself – whilst also working as a team therapist in Gaelic, rugby and football, a particular passion for musculoskeletal [he was the guy who hated He-Man, right?] led her to four and a half years in a large physiotherapy and sports injury clinic in Australia. And heading out on the road with the New South Wales Men’s Master’s Hockey teams.

“I look back on it now, and it was just such a great experience,” Niamh adds. “Not only learning more and more about my profession but also just being out there in a place as vast and wild as Australia. Loved it, even if it did ultimately make me appreciate home even more…”

Such a longing for Ireland led to Niamh setting up her own physiotherapy clinic on Florence Road in Bray, where she was based for nine years. Until, late last year, someone showed her a very sunny, practically-penthouse studio in Charlesland.

Covering everything from massage and physiotherapy to pilates and the new Stronger Bones programme, Niamh Coffey Physiotherapy is open for appointments Monday from 9.30am to 6.30pm, Tuesday to Thursday from 9am to 9pm, and Friday from 9am to 6pm. More details here.
